Read on to learn more about how Duffy Compliance is helping organizations stay secure and focused on growth.
The world of information technology and cybersecurity grows more complicated with each passing year, and with the recent surge of AI, keeping businesses safe from virtual threats is more challenging than ever. This can be a lot for businesses to handle while balancing numerous other responsibilities such as staffing, training, marketing, and growth, among others. This creates opportunities for those who are skilled in IT and cybersecurity to provide vital services.
Enter Duffy Compliance. Founded by Shawn Duffy in 2014, the company provides cybersecurity consulting services to businesses across the country. “We understand that our clients are not in the cybersecurity business; however, everyone needs to protect their assets and data,” Shawn explained. “Our goal is to relieve our clients’ stress of having to comply with federal regulations without their having to become an expert on the regulation,” Shawn continued. “We want our clients to rely on our ability to cover the ground necessary to achieve federal mandates.”
Shawn brings over 35 years of real-world experience in the cybersecurity industry to his role of President and CEO, positioning Duffy Compliance as a leader in the industry as they work to stay on the forefront of emerging technology trends and challenges.
Turning Trials into Opportunities
The decision to start a business wasn’t one that Shawn took lightly. After being unexpectedly let go from his previous employer, he felt it was time to take his job security into his own hands. “I decided I didn’t need a boss to be successful. I also didn’t want to lose a job ever again for no reason,” Shawn stated. He takes the adverse firsthand experience of being laid off and allows it to help mold his company values. “I also hold true to that belief toward my own employees. That cavalier attitude won’t ever be part of our culture.”
As many business owners initially discover, running a business and being skilled in your field of work are two different things that are often hard to balance. Shawn was no different. “I was a highly technical person who could do the work and yet had no experience running a company. Basically, I started out being the worst boss I’d ever worked for,” he said candidly. “I am 11 years into this entrepreneurial mode, and I am still learning how to move from working ‘in’ the business to ‘on’ the business.”
This hard work has paid off for Duffy Compliance, as the company has been able to lay a solid framework and set itself up for growth and sustainability for years to come. “This past year I was able to figure out how to hire the right people to fill the right seats. This has helped me and my business. We are now working with the right characteristics and solid strategies to grow the business.”
Growing in Frederick County
Shawn has called Frederick County home for 30 years and has experienced firsthand the positive business culture the area offers. “I believe the county government wants to be involved in the success of their local small businesses, and it shows in organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC),” Shawn offered when asked about doing business in Frederick County.
The Frederick Office of Economic Development, along with its partners such as the SBDC, offer numerous resources to both new and existing businesses. Many of these resources are free and provide the community with valuable opportunities to network, learn, and get their business’ name out to the public.
“In my journey, I’ve supported security training classes for the SBDC and attended marketing and tax trainings for small businesses,” Shawn continued. “I’ve delivered presentation sessions at the Frederick Chamber and the SBDC and attended many of their networking meetings while I figured out the best avenue for me to spend my time as the company executive.”

Cybersecurity Confidence with Duffy Compliance
Shawn and his dedicated team share a common goal: helping their clients simplify their compliance processes, protect their data, and achieve accreditation. “Instead of just performing technical services, we take on an executive-level role—guiding your decisions, strengthening your security, and ensuring long-term compliance so you can focus on running your business with confidence,” Shawn explained when asked what the Frederick County community should know about Duffy Compliance. “We don’t just offer advice; we step into the role, align with your culture, and take responsibility of your security strategy. We understand that hiring a consultant isn’t your first choice, but our goal is to earn your trust by reducing the burden of protecting your systems and data, so you can focus on growing your business with confidence.”
